Luftwaffe Aviation History

By Dr. David Myhra

Circular-Winged Aircraft

Some of the most successful circular winged flying machines came about in the 1930's and spilling over into the 1940's and 1950's, when this platform pretty much was abandoned. Among the numerous photos presented are Dr Snyder and R. Hoffman's "Dirigiplane" and their motorized ARUP Incorporated S-2, Steven Nemeth and his "Roundwing" of 1934, two images of Chauncey "Chance" Vought, Charles Zimmerman and his "Zimmer Skinner" or Vought V-173. Featured, too, is an article from "Modern Mechanix" magazine from May 1947 on "The Flying Flapjack" or the U.S. Navy's XF5U and the exciting possibilities it was about to create in personal aircraft. The final image is that of a proposed twin gas turbine powered XF5U. Color digital images created for Dr Myhra by world-class digital artist Jozef Gatial.
